The Tork T6X will be manufactured at the company’s new factory in Pune.
In 2016, Tork Motors, the Pune-based electric vehicle start-up, announced it was opening pre-bookings for its highly anticipated T6X Electric Motorcycle. Things fell silent a short time later.
- Company founder says bikes are ready for launch
- The original price was indicated at Rs 1.25 lakh
- The original figures claimed were a range of 100 km and a top speed of 100 km / h
Tork engines: history
The challenges for successfully starting an automotive start-up are immense, and Ather Energy is one of the few Indian companies to have done this with a high quality product.
Long before the launch of Ather, Tork Motors was to be among the first electric vehicle start-ups to launch a product truly designed, developed and manufactured in India. This product was based on lessons learned from the company’s electric racing program at prestigious events overseas, including the Isle of Man TT, where Tork won a podium in 2009.
However, delays are a natural course of action for most start-ups, as are the financial challenges, which Tork Motors has faced. Along the way, the company has raised funds from big names, including Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal in 2016 and more recently, Ratan Tata in 2019.
Then came the global pandemic in early 2020, which founder Kapil Shelke acknowledges in his recent Instagram post was another challenge. Nonetheless, Shelke now says, “We’re ready to get out of stealth mode. As promised, we are ready to deliver the best in class product to our customers. It took longer than expected, but good things take time.
Tork Engines: T6X
The Tork Motors motorcycle unveiled in 2016 was called T6X and Shelke’s recent article says it will keep that name. However, much of the bike should be different now. “The structure of the bike has completely changed, with a redesigned LED headlight and tail light, a new switch group, a bigger battery, more ‘Tork’ and more power,” Shelke added.
These last three points are essential because the original T6X claimed a top speed of 100 km / h and a range of 100 km – good numbers for 2016, but not enough for 2021. At the time, the bike claimed a empty weight of 130 kg with an electric motor of 27 Nm.
Tork claims to have developed a “revolutionary 96% efficient axial flow motor” and that the bike will be manufactured in its new factory outside of Pune.
Tork Motors: launch of the T6X
That’s the extent of information available at the moment, but Shelke says in her Instagram post that more details will be revealed shortly. We have requested more information on the product and the actual launch date, but have not had a response at the time of writing.
As for the price, the price of the Tork T6X was expected to be around Rs 1.25 lakh in 2016. However, although input costs have increased significantly since then, strong government subsidies have also been introduced, it will be therefore interesting to see where the bicycle is positioned today on the market.
