The company, best known for producing auto parts that are exported around the world, has announced plans to produce electric two- and three-wheelers through its associated company, Tork Motors, based in Maharashtra. The first model would be available on the market in 2022.

Tork Motors claims to be India’s leading manufacturer of luxury electric motorcycles, with two-wheeled powertrains in development since 2009. In 2018, Puna-based Bharat Forge bought a 45% stake in Tork Motors, which has then increased to 49%. .

Tork Motors is a company that creates electric motorcycles and electric powertrains for cargo and passenger three-wheelers. According to the website: “Tork Motors builds Asia’s first electric motorcycle to compete in the Isle of Man Electric GP.” The company, which also focuses on producing high-performance motorcycles for motorsport, states that “with racing DNA and learnings from previous races, the passion for riding an electric motorcycle has never been less. Baba Kalyani’s Bharat Forge announced last week that Tork Motors has met government grant requirements for the adoption and manufacture of Electric Vehicles Phase II (FAME-II), a program to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles by offering buyers discounts. According to reports, the company said: “We are pleased to announce that Tork Motors has obtained FAME-II approval for several products, both in two and three wheelers and launches are planned accordingly. We will make a detailed announcement in November. . “

The Bharat Forge website has information about the Tork Motors T6X model, which is powered by lithium-ion batteries, can reach a top speed of 100 km / h and travel 100 kilometers on a single charge. It also has a fast charge mode which claims to charge the battery to 80% of its capacity in an hour.

Bharat Forge will join a wide range of competitors including startups like Ola Electric and Ather Energy, as well as top automakers like Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, TVS Motor Company, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India.

Electric scooters are among the products offered by these companies, some exceeding Rs 1 lakh in price. Meanwhile, Tork is interested in forming a partnership with three-wheeler manufacturers to supply electric powertrains.

Some of the biggest companies in the electric three-wheeler sector include Mahindra & Mahindra, Piaggio and Atul Auto, while Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company have yet to introduce their models in this segment.

With the support of Kalyani Powertrain (KPTL), which houses the electric mobility business, Bharat Forge plans to achieve a market share of 5 to 6% in the field of electric mobility (two and three wheels, trucks and buses ) by 2025. KPTL is in discussions with vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators to make its electric mobility platform available to them.
