The Union accuses the government of “abuse of taxpayers’ money”

CWU questions decision not to use post office for delivery services

Using an independent courier rather than the Isle of Man post office to perform lateral flow testing is an “incredible misuse of taxpayer dollars”.

This is the view of the Communication Workers Union, which has criticized the Isle of Man government‘s decision to use what it calls the “gig economy” to transport goods.

The Isle of Man Post Office issued a statement calling the move “disappointing”.

Steve Halliwell of the union says the lack of a bidding process is a concern:

In a statement broadcast to Manx Radio, the Isle of Man Post Office said: “The Isle of Man Post Office has provided suggestions to DHSC for its storage, wrapping, wrapping, labeling and delivery service following LFD’s online inquiries in recent months, and provided a quote outside of the formal bidding or procurement portal process in the same manner as it did. in recent years with respect to the various ongoing government plans for things like electoral registration, enumeration, vehicle registration, pensions, and benefit payments.

“For example, Swiss Post was disappointed to learn that an interim arrangement had been made with someone else.

IOMPO has repeatedly highlighted its concerns in Tynwald about the island’s concert economy over the past few years and the negative impact this will have on businesses like the Trusted Postal Service.

“IOMPO acknowledges the views expressed by the CWU regarding this matter and our employees it represents.”

Meanwhile, the Isle of Man government said: “The government does not comment in detail on individual companies, except to clarify that all government contracts are awarded taking into account a combination of price and price factors. quality.

“The Isle of Man Post Office has been asked to quote for some distribution work and alternative quotes have been obtained. On this occasion, the IOMPO failed and the award went to a well-respected and established alternative supplier in the logistics industry.

“It is important to note that current procurement policies and financial regulations do not favor statutory advice over external suppliers when providing commercial services and, as such, must win awards from the government in as part of an open market process.

“The work has been offered on a temporary and initial basis and a new supply is planned for a longer term solution which will again be conducted on a free market basis. “
