Is the NHS domain being used in a way that maximizes its potential? That was the key question behind this discussion moderated by The Manser Practice.
The Business Case for Innovation and Healthcare Roundtable was an opportunity to explore the future of NHS sites beyond owning medical facilities. They present opportunities for patient hotels, schools and laboratories. It was an opportunity to think outside the box to come up with solutions that can help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of these areas.

The discussion was chaired by Julia Hatmaker, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of North West Square.
The Manser Practice is an award-winning architecture and interior design studio with over 55 years of experience delivering private, commercial and public projects: hotels, hospitals, offices, residences and government buildings. Ongoing projects include the Isle of Man ferry terminal at Liverpool Waters, a collaboration with the Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and a large mixed-use development in Gibraltar.
Roundtable talking points
Guy Barlow: “The Kings Fund had a pretty interesting analysis that at the end of 2020 alone there was £ 9bn of maintenance backlog. This is even before any new development or reorganization of any of these areas.
Michelle Humphreys: “Traditionally, perhaps, the NHS areas have been seen as a bit of an island… A hospital is not just a place you should come to when you are in pain. But, in fact, what else can we do as community anchor organizations to add value and reach out to the community? “
Conor Ellis: “If we look at many hospitals, between 30% and 35% of the space is reserved for administration… if we can show them that we can build high quality office type elements, either at the edge of the sites or This is because in some cases off-site we can, again, reduce the amount of space in hospitals – making it easier to rearrange and free up space. “
Jonathan Manser: “We have repeatedly looked at areas of health care and found that there was a lot of vacant land. There is land that could be used not only for health care, but also for peripheral, related issues, such as health hotels, training centers, social care centers, etc. And in that process… create some sort of health village or hub for the community.
Leon Guyett: “It’s about making sure you have a master plan, that you look at it in a holistic way. That you examine the assets to see which ones can be reused. Is it cheaper to refurbish them? Do we need to bring it down? Do we need a new building? What is this new building? Some of these areas are so big that they could almost become their own city in 15 minutes.
