As the warmer months of northern Europe approach temptingly closer, motorcyclists have two reasons to rejoice. Soon it will be time to pull their two-wheelers out of storage, and after two years of mostly non-attendees, Europe’s calendar of annual motorcycling-related events looks to be shaping up well for 2022. Those looking for a new motorcycle or new equipment for their safety, style and comfort will find inspiration by visiting one of Europe’s largest fairs for two-wheelers and other Hobbies. A trio of major events planned for 2022 include INTERMOT in Cologne, Germany, October 4-9; EICMA in Milan, Italy from November 8-13 and Motorcycle Live in Birmingham, UK from November 19-27.
Magic Bike: The UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley loses much of its usual tranquility in mid-June as thousands of bikers flock to take part in one of the biggest Harley- Davidson of Europe. Riders enjoy a four-day program that includes group rides through spectacular scenery, an accessory market, bike shows, fireworks and live rock concerts. Those still in the dream stage of owning a bike can just sit by the side of the road and admire the flashy models taking part in the motorbike parade. Hamburg Harley Days: Germany’s second-largest city is racing to host its annual three-day biker show from June 24-26. While program details are still being worked out, the agenda is sure to include the usual elements of the biker parade, fireworks show, live rock music, demonstration rides, guided tours and bike show where 100 custom-built bikes undergo close scrutiny from the jury. BMW Days: The BMW Motorrad Days are celebrating their return to the venue after a two-year shutdown due to the pandemic by changing location. The Summer Garden at Berlin’s exhibition center is hosting the event dedicated to the local high-tech brand on July 2 and 3. Visitors can expect live music, action shows, trials, fashion and lifestyle accessories, and plenty of custom bikes. The event is preceded by a sister event on the same site. European HOG Rally: This annual gathering of Harley-Davidson riders takes place in a multitude of scenic locations. In 2022, cyclists and their bikes will meet in Portorož, Slovenia, an Adriatic port town just south of Piran. From June 9-12, those gathered will enjoy group rides, live music and a colorful entertainment program. The Harley-Davidson parade tends to be a highlight for locals and attendees. European Bike Week: From September 6-11, the Austrian region of Carinthia hosts this annual event which is held on the shores of the Faaker See, a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by mountains, ideal for group or solo hikes. “The Lake Rocks” is the name given to the accompanying free music program, with more than 50 concerts at lakeside venues from September 8-11. The region’s proud culinary traditions will also be showcased, with plenty of hearty smoked and grilled meat dishes to satiate the appetites of hungry bikers. Online: bikeweek.at/fr
Isle of Man TT Races: The Tourist Trophy races, better known as the TT races, are an annual motorcycle race held on the open roads of the rugged Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown dependency in the Irish Sea. The race, first held in 1907, is known for its mountainous course with lots of turns and is notorious for its many crashes. The race is held in different divisions depending on the type of motorcycle and the experience level of the rider. Sidecar racing is also very present. The 2022 edition is scheduled for May 29 to June 3 (qualifying week) and June 4 to 11 (race week). The ferry service to the island, available from Heysham, Liverpool, Dublin and Belfast, is boosted during race periods to accommodate a steady flow of spectators. Many race fans will choose to camp somewhere near the 37.73-mile course or base themselves at the IOMTT Village, a pop-up resort near Douglas, the start and finish point of the race. Moto GP races: Grand Prix motorcycle racing refers to a racing series consisting of 21 outings held on some of the world’s most iconic tracks. Racers race on specially designed machines that are not available for purchase by the general public. In 2022, 13 of these races are taking place on European soil, including events held in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Great Britain and Austria. Germany’s exit takes place at the Sachsenring near Chemnitz on June 19, while Britain hosts its race at Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire on August 7.
