Local bank loses $ 10,000 in fraudulent check scheme, man arrested

A New Hartford man is accused of stealing more than $ 10,000 from an area bank branch as part of a fraudulent check-cashing scheme.

New Hartford Police have charged Justin Vanderhoof, 36, with Third Degree Theft, a Class D felony. Police said over the course of a month several checks were deposited into an NBT bank account. Then, shortly thereafter, the funds were withdrawn from the bank using “various methods”.

Bank officials say the checks initially deposited had no funds available to cover these subsequent withdrawals. In fact, according to police, they were only dropped off as part of the current program.

Vanderhoof was arraigned on the Grand Larceny indictment and sent to the Oneida County Jail.
