Captains should add personal information to small boats. Here’s why.

Going out in your canoe or kayak in the summer is probably one of Maine’s most fun things to do. Whether it’s cruising along the coast or hitting the lakes and rivers of the state, there are so many fun places to go. But for Maine game wardens and coast guards, it can be a tough time, according to the Press herald.

An ounce of prevention ….

Sometimes, in a perfectly harmless way, a boat can become loose and drift. And sometimes these drifting boats attract the attention of other people on the water. Then the immediate question becomes: is there anyone in trouble?

Of course, fortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes bad weather or a bad mooring job sends your small canoe or kayak into the sunset. But it also sets off a chain of events for authorities to attempt to locate the owner. Either to return it, or to launch a search.

You don’t wanna be that guy … or that girl.

The Coast Guard recommends that people put their personal information on their boats. Obviously, don’t put your bank account password there, but your name, phone number, and other important information should be placed in an easy-to-find place on your boat.

This will save officials tons of work. If your boat gets lost, this will reduce the time it will take to get it back to you. Or worse, if you get lost, it will speed up the time it takes to start looking for you, as they will know who they are looking for, or can use it to verify your identity.

Either way, it’s something that will take two minutes to do, with a sturdy sharpie, or paint marker, etc. But it could literally save your life. Or at the very least, save your boat.
