C2I 2021: Young Innovator Selection

Among the Young Innovator projects shortlisted this year were a cost-effective search and rescue robot and an autonomous smart home vertical garden. This category is sponsored by STFC

This project, undertaken by GCSE student Nishka Mathur, involves the development of a product to help older people and people with reduced mobility store and access items without having to bend down.

Inspired by his father’s struggles in this field, Mathur’s innovative concept features a shelf consisting of a lift-up internal unit that rests on two scissor lifts and an elongated base with attached lever used to push the lifting mechanism to scissors.

When the lever is turned, it pushes the shelf up allowing users to place or retrieve items from its lower shelves without having to bend over. While still in the design stage, Mathur believes the product could be marketed and enable older people to lead more independent lives.

Project: Aman Surana – Warwick Moto

Partners: WMG Warwick Manufacturing Group, Catapult & Norton Motorcycles

Team Warwick Moto, a multi-department team at the University of Warwick, is student-led who have developed and built ‘Frontier’ – an electric motorcycle, capable of taking the Isle of Man’s TT Zero course at a speed average over 100 mph.

Founded by engineering student Aman Surana, the innovation involved working with companies such as Norton Motorcycles. One of the aims of the project was to take the vehicle from concept to track in 15 months and eventually enter the Isle of Man TT.

As Covid-19 proved disruptive, the team achieved many firsts, including becoming the first to introduce immersion cooling on an electric motorcycle with the support of MIVOLT Liquid Immersion Cooling by M&I Materials.

Project: In Veeta

Partners: Amir Hessari with Omar Al Maaytah and Riccardo Barbieri

Established by a multi-disciplinary team of engineering students from Loughborough University, the In Veeta concept is that of a fully self-contained smart home vertical garden.

The product would allow the user to grow their own produce with minimal effort but with more nutritional results. It has entered the prototyping phase and is gathering data collected from sensors such as soil moisture, light level and Ph level. utilization of resources and improving efficiency.

The system aims for multiple environmental and social benefits such as reducing carbon footprint and improving community, physical and mental health.

Project: Prasinos

Partners: TeenTech with Polysolar

This project, undertaken by students from the Ursuline Academy in Ilford, involves the development of a building design with a mushroom-shaped filter that could be placed above the building amongst plant life. Its objective would be to absorb the carbon dioxide produced and transform it into renewable energy to create electricity and heat, while improving biodiversity.

The creative design concept involved a collaboration with solar energy company Polysolar, which helped incorporate its photovoltaic glazing materials into the design idea for an additional power generation aspect.

While in the early design stages with limited proof of feasibility, the ideas behind the project show potential to help tackle the problems presented by climate change.

Project: Search and Rescue Robot for LICs

Partners: Reading School

The proposed robot, designed by Reading School student Samuel Amos-Osebeyo, focuses on a cost-effective, easy-to-use and reliable solution for search and rescue operations that could be used by low-income countries. following disasters such as explosions and mining accidents.

The design was based on the leading robot PackBot, with the aim of creating a similar robot at a lower cost.

Currently, the project has progressed to the development of a functional 3D-printed robot chassis, capable of sending sensor data via tethered and wireless communication methods.
