A Utica man is facing multiple charges after a police investigation into a shorts-shooting incident that began around 11:30 p.m. Friday, July 22, 2022.
Officers were called to the 1200 block of City Street after receiving a call about a shooting incident. Witnesses at the scene showed UPD members several used .380 caliber shell casings that were strewn in the driveway of a house across the street.
According to a written statement from the Utica Police Department, officers saw a man standing next to a car parked in the driveway as they inspected casings. They approached the man and, while speaking with him, investigators saw “numerous live and spent cartridges inside the vehicle. Additionally, they located an area of the vehicle that appeared to have been fired from inside the vehicle, outwards towards the street.”
The male suspect, identified as Jamal Richardson, 31, of Utica, admitted the vehicle was his. He was taken to the police station for questioning while his vehicle was towed away and searched.
During the search of the vehicle, the UPD claims that casings and cartridges were found in the vehicle. Police say a loaded .380 caliber handgun was found under the driver’s seat.
Richardson was arrested. He now faces the following charges:
- Second degree criminal possession of a weapon
- Third degree criminal possession of a weapon
- Criminal possession of a firearm
