Alderney hosts inter-island environmental summit

His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor of the Bailliage of Guernsey, Lieutenant General Richard Cripwell CB CBE, opens the Inter-Island Environment Meeting 2022 in Alderney on Thursday 13 October.

The two-day conference marks Alderney’s sixth time hosting IIEM, with delegates from the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight and the UK.

Founded in 2000, the Inter-Island Environment Meeting (IIEM) annually brings together island governments, charities, businesses and individuals working in the environmental sector. More than 90 delegates are due to attend and around 40 are expected to travel to the island in person.

Alderney has always played an important role in IIEM, hosting some of the most diverse programs and in 2019 over 120 delegates attended from islands across the British Isles and the North Atlantic. Not only do the meetings showcase Alderney’s rich natural environment, they also have a significant impact on the local economy.

The theme of this year’s meeting is “Sharing Knowledge and Developing Best Practices”. The talks will also focus on how to respond to the growing number of environmental emergencies, particularly poignant given the impact of bird flu this year and the ongoing fight against invasive species such as Asian hornets.

Speakers this year will include representatives from the various Channel Island States, Isle of Wight Council, Isle of Man and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trusts and the British Trust for Ornithology, among others. In total, there will be 20 presentations and five other workshops focused on establishing new collaborations between the different islands.

The conference itself will take place in the Orangery of the Georgian House Hotel on Victoria Street. It is hosted by the States of Alderney and the Alderney Wildlife Trust (through support from Charles Asprey) and was made possible through the support of KPMG in the Crown Dependencies.
