McLean only made his debut on the 37.73 mile mountain course in 2017 and competed twice in the TT with the Tobermore driver forced to miss the first show of the road race due to injury in 2019.
McLean told the News Letter: “I was looking forward to the possibility of returning to the Isle of Man this year at the Classic TT because I was not sine 2018, but this was also canceled due to Covid.
“Next year I will have missed three years in the TT, but no one else got to run there and it’s the same for everyone.
“I’ve only done two TT events and a year in the Classic so I’m still a newcomer,” added McLean, who was the top TT newcomer in his first year in 2017.
“So for missing it for three years, I’ll be back next year and treat the event like a newcomer – that’s probably the best way to approach it again and I’m just going to try and build to. new on things from there.
More than 16 months after his Tandragee crash, McLean made a successful return to the roads in 2020 at the Cookstown 100, where he won Supersport and Supertwin races to give local team McAdoo Racing Kawasaki a double celebration in September.
The Co Tyrone reunion was the only Irish road race to take place last year due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Once again, the Irish road racing calendar has been hit hard by the lingering effects of Covid-19 this year, with Armoy at the end of July and the Cookstown 100 – postponed from its traditional weekend in April to September – the only races currently scheduled to go.
McLean and his new Ballymoney teammate Darryl Tweed are likely to be household names on the entry list at all of the Ulster short-circuit races that take place over the summer, with both riders keen to take advantage of the track time available given the scarcity of national races over the past year.
A short circuit event took place in 2020 in Kirkistown and the Co Down site is preparing to host the first race of this season on June 5, when motorcycle racing is expected to resume.
McLean said: “I had nerve damage in my arm which left my wrist very weak, but it’s healing better than I expected and I’m confident I’ll be ready to run in June.
“We would most likely do the short circuit races here because it’s mileage and track time, which we don’t get a lot at the moment, so if there are races we’ll be there.
“There are four events scheduled for Scarborough but unfortunately the last two clashes with Armoy and Cookstown, which is disappointing as I would have liked to have participated in the Cock’o the North meeting and the Gold Cup. I was there in 2017 and haven’t been back since, but I would like to come back and run again at some point.
“I would also have liked to go do some of the IRRC rounds in Europe this year, just because we wouldn’t have a chance in a normal season to go and do events like this because we’re so busy with the schedule that We have.
“But it just depends on how the situation goes with traveling to Europe, although I would love to go there if it was possible and do one or two if the situation allows.
“I hope the road race can bounce back from next year as it has been difficult and there is no real guarantee of a schedule at this point.”
